Trading the opening-range breakout before 10:00 ET

The same signal carries information after 10:00 that it does not before, so the clock is the lever.

Pre-10:00 breaks: no surviving edge

The hypothesis, as pre-registered

The opening range sets the day's reference levels, so the first break of that range should carry directional information.

What the test found

Under a hard 09:30–12:00 window, breaks triggered before 10:00 ET do not survive the cost gate. The opening thirty minutes generate the most signals and the least information — the range is still being defined while the strategy is already trading it.

The same trigger restricted to 10:00 onward survives on some markets, which is why this entry is marked conditional rather than dead. The idea is not wrong; the clock attached to it was.

Worth noting for anyone reusing this: the entry clock is free on some strategies and expensive on others. On one deployed stream, seven to nine percent of gross profit lived in the first minute after the signal — which means a strategy that looks robust to entry timing may simply have not been tested at the resolution where it breaks.

What would make this work

The break would have to clear costs on a window that begins after the opening range has actually finished forming — and the improvement would have to survive the drift null, not just the raw P&L.

Every insight ends with this line: the exact condition that would turn the finding into a tradeable edge. That is what makes each entry a next experiment rather than a full stop.
