Running a strategy on volume bars instead of time bars
It replicates cleanly and matches the time chart. The mechanism is real and monotone; it simply lands in the bracket, not in the signal.

The hypothesis, as pre-registered
A bar that closes on a fixed quantity of contracts samples the market by activity rather than by the clock, so the volatility estimate that sizes the stop should be sharper and the strategy should do better.
What the test found
At the bar size matched to thirty minutes the strategy passes every gate on a true tick build, and paired against the time chart over 536 shared sessions the difference is +$90 a trade at t = +1.12. Noise. It wins one of four matched-granularity comparisons on return-to-drawdown, and a nine-size sweep has no plateau — the peak moves depending on which statistic you look at.
The mechanism it was supposed to exploit does fire. The volume-bar volatility estimate is tighter on busy sessions, monotonically across quintiles, correlating −0.59 with session volume. It is also +0.94 correlated with the thirty-minute estimate, and substituting it at equal median width costs $64 to $86 a trade. A real, monotone, well-motivated mechanism that re-sorts 6% of a measure is worth zero.
Two things break silently when a clock-based study is moved onto a volume chart, and both flatter the volume chart in a backtest. Only 7.1% of sessions have a bar that starts exactly on the decision minute, so a study that gates on bar time equalling signal time quietly takes about 7% of its trades and says nothing about the rest. And an accumulator keyed on bars whose start falls inside the opening block drags in trades from after the block closed: a median of 1.24 times the true volume, which is lookahead, not a rounding error.
What would make this work
The volume clock would have to change the signal, not just the bracket. Where both legs of a strategy are session-level aggregates, bar construction cannot touch them, and the test is a bracket test wearing a bar-type costume.
Every insight ends with this line: the exact condition that would turn the finding into a tradeable edge. That is what makes each entry a next experiment rather than a full stop.
